Abstract: An 11-year-old boy with a history of pyruvate
kinase (PK) deficiency hereditary hemolytic
anaemia undergoing chronic treatment with blood
transfusions. At the age of four the patient initiated
iron-chelation therapy due to secondary iron
overload. At the age of 7 it was decided to switch from
deferoxamine subcutaneous infusion to deferasirox
oral administration in order to improve health- related
quality of life. During deferoxamine treatment
multiple ophthalmological studies were performed
and no alterations were identified. After 4 years of
treatment with deferasirox the patient complained
of decreased visual acuity and dyschromatopsia.
Fundoscopic and visual evoked tests abnormalities
were found. Deferasirox was suspended, suspected
of drug toxicity, and a remarkable improvement in
visual acuity was evidenced.
