Abstract: For centuries, physician beneficence went unchallenged as the first principle of medical ethics. It was not until a quarter of a century ago when patient’s autonomy was asserted
as a prima fascie moral principle of equal of greater weight than beneficence. The first principle of medical ethics, the end to which it is directed is the good of the patient. The medical good must be brought into proper relationship with the other levels of the patient´s good. These qualities, preferences, values and the kind of life he wants to live are unique for each patient and cannot be defined
by the physician, the family or anyone else. Patient´s values and preferences are recognized to be essential in deciding treatments.
In particular in hematology patient´s values regarding the relative importance of preventing stroke and avoiding bleeding are now recognized to be of great importance in deciding on therapy prevention of stroke. We intend with this article highlight the importance of considering patients values and preferences when deciding therapy.
