Abstract: The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune
disease defined by the presence of antiphospholipid
antibodies (aPL) in patients with thrombotic complications and/or pregnancy morbidity.
aPL are detected as lupus anticoagulant (LA) or anticardiolipin (aCL) or anti-β2 glycoprotein I antibodies (aβ2GPI) by solid-phase assays. The interpretation
of aCL and aβ2GPI results depends on the cut-off points of the assays.
It is important to establish the normal cut-off as well as the clinical cut-off point which is related
to the APS diagnosis. Values above the normal cut-off but below the clinical cut-off point as well as the presence of weak LA have very little clinical significance.
