Abstract: Most of the practices in the laboratory of
hematology are related with observations that include
the identification of cells and the interpretation of the
composition of blood cell populations. In this work,
the methodology used in automated instruments for
the conventional blood examination is reviewed,
including the measurement of hemoglobin, erythrocyte
count and erithrocyte indexes, platelets count, total
and differential leukocyte count, and reticulocytes.
Different technologies used for those measurements
are described, with examples of automated
hematology analyzers used, available in the market.
