Is it possible to compensate for hypoxia
without elevating hemoglobin?
Authors: Merelli A, Lazarowski A
Abstract: “Hypobaric hypoxia” can limit physical functional
capacity, reproductive health and even survival.
Consequently, a natural selection of genetic variants
that give hypoxia adaptation advantage must have
occurred to explain how several populations can
live to 3,000-4,000 mts above sea level. Such genetic
signatures, recently described in villages living in
Ethiopia or in the Andean regions, may alter function
and increase Hb concentrations. On the other
hand, the tibetans show no elevation of Hb. In them,
other genetic variants altered energy performance,
respiratory rate and blood flow as the adaptive way
of living in these conditions.
